There are some people who's energy is so respectful, so welcoming, and so strong, you can only hope that you get the chance to know them. You know they're an incredible person, you know they work incredibly hard, and you know they are always pushing themselves to be better than they were even just the day before. This was my immediate reaction to meeting the incredible Kelly.
The day after the Boston Marathon, 2015, Kelly, I and our families were standing in Newark boarding a plan back to Houston. We both had our newly minted (and earned!) Boston Marathon Jackets on, so we noticed each other immediately. But quite honestly, it would have been hard to miss her. Kelly is this tall, beautiful, lean, and strong woman. She walks so gracefully, and stands so at peace. She has a beautiful smile that makes her eyes sparkle. And as he entertained her little girl in the airport, she was flashing it constantly. We exchanged a hello, spoke nothing more, then boarded the plane. Upon arriving in Houston, we found ourselves on the same parking shuttle. Two runners, with Boston Marathon Jackets on - we got to talking!
She ran the Boston Marathon like a badass - fast and strong, and left nothing out on the course. Myself on the other hand, I was "just" a Charity Runner, running for a friend's dream. She immediately corrected me, and said "there is no just with Boston, you ran Boston". It was the first time I felt comfortable with that, because of her. More talking went on, and come to find out, we were both running the same 50-Miler that coming Saturday. The most hilarious part of all of this was the stunned looks on our husbands faces - could there be two as crazy as us? Absolutely! We arrived at our cars, said we would see each other Saturday, and said our good byes. Saturday's race came and we wished each other well there. It was NOT easy, but we got it done (I called it at the 50K, and Kelly nailed the 50 Miler!). And from then, friendship was born.
Kelly is a treasure. She is a professional, a wife, a mother, a philanthropist, a mentor, a friend, and a role model to all. Her warm smiles, sparkling eyes, graceful gait, and incredible advice are second to none. Her dedication to her family is noteworthy beyond words. She Founded and is the Chair for the Houston Wellness Project. Her dedication this Program helps people get healthy, stay healthy, and makes running accessible to them. The Program literally changes lives one run, and one runner at a time. Her daughter and husband are lucky to have such an incredible woman at the helm. And all of us are so lucky to have such an amazing role model leading the way. Her color is 100 Mile Black, because shortly she will be joining the 100-Miler Club very shortly. For everything incredible she is, and everything incredible she is yet to be, we proudly introduce you to the Kelly Skort.
